This day holds much for many.
Those of us who are old enough will recall what that day twenty years ago held for us and those closest to us. We’ll share our own stories and hear stories of those whose experience was most tragic and heartbreaking.
Sometimes words flow freely, and other times they seem to be stuck deep inside. With all that humanity is faced with and has endured most recently, collectively and individually, today feels like one of those stuck days for me.
May we surrender to rest, remember, and trust. And may we offer ourselves as channels of peace—outwardly and within.
A prayer:
O God, how we long for you.
How we long for those brief encounters—
those moments when we are able
to fully surrender all that we are to you—
to be our constant resting place.
How is it
that you reside within us
and all around,
yet we forget?
How is it
that parts of us
fully trust you
and your love for us,
yet other parts of us
doubt and are anxious?
How is it
that this world is so full
of beauty and kindness and love,
yet there is so much
hate and hurt and pain?
O God, give us a spirit of rest.
O God, give us a spirit of remembrance.
O God, give us a spirit of trust.
O God, give us a spirit of peace.
Amen.
